A comparative study of the motif of the five-feathered flower in the decorations of the magnificent palaces of Qapo and Chehelston Esfahan

Five-petal flower is one of the most used decorative signs in Iranian buildings. Ali Qapu palace and Chehel Sotun palace are two of the buildings which five-petal flowers are used in them in tremendous numbers. Diversity, beauty, production and implemention methods are considerable in these palaces. The research porpuse is analysing and aspects of distinctions this motif’s features and developments in these two palaces considering their form and implemention techniques and coloring. Therefore, the research’s question is ‘ what are the similarities and unsimilarities of visual and technical features of five-petal flower motif in these two palaces?’. The research method is descriptive-comparative. Data collection has been done through filed and written documents and direct viewing. The research results show that the use of five-feathered flowers in two buildings is important and according to their initial form, they seem to have followed a single pattern. At Chehelston Palace special tricks such as; Naturalism, construction, elegance are used in the design, role and execution. Painting and gilding have also been used in a wide range. But in Qapoo Palace, due to the limited color, variety in technique, execution and size has been seen.
